Easy Egg Roll in a Bowl

We are obsessed with this easy egg roll in a bowl recipe! It’s made with tender ground chicken (or turkey) and crisp veggies tossed in an outrageously good savory sauce.

Egg Roll in a Bowl

This quick and healthy dinner has become one of our go-to recipes lately. It takes everything we love about classic egg rolls and turns it into a ridiculously simple and delicious meal you can make in 30 minutes or less.

It’s perfect for busy weeknights and great for meal prep. We love adding a drizzle of spicy mayo on top, which brings everything together beautifully. For another easy dinner idea, try our easy fried rice.

Key Ingredients

  • Ground Meat: I used ground turkey in our photos, but you can use ground chicken or pork without any changes.
  • Sesame Oil: You’ll cook the ground meat in toasted sesame oil, which is one of my secrets to this recipe’s incredible flavor! I use the same trick when making my chicken lettuce wraps.
  • Veggies: The veggies are my favorite part of this recipe! We use shredded cabbage, carrots, green onions, and bell peppers. I provide a range for the cabbage in our recipe below, as you can pack quite a lot into this dish. To save some chopping, grab a pre-shredded coleslaw mix and just add the green onion and bell pepper.
  • Oyster Sauce, Soy Sauce, and Honey: These three make up the sauce, and they’re the reason this bowl tastes so good. It’s incredible how flavorful it is, considering it has just three ingredients. I love Lee Kum Kee Premium Oyster Sauce (the one with the boat on the label), which I also use for the filling in these crispy spring rolls.
  • Cashews and Cilantro: The first time we made this, it felt like something was missing. A handful of chopped nuts and a pop of fresh cilantro turned out to be the perfect finishing touch. Chopped peanuts work just as well.
  • Optional, but Delicious: For a bit of heat, add a drizzle of sriracha or spoon on some quick spicy mayo to make things extra saucy. I do this in our video and highly recommend that you do the same. Another option is to drizzle over our Bang Bang sauce (it’s easy!).

How to Make My Favorite Egg Roll Bowl

Tip 1: Partially cook the meat first. Before adding all the veggies, cook your ground chicken or ground turkey in a hot pan with sesame oil. The sesame adds a lovely aroma and helps the meat brown a bit.

Tip 2: Pile in the veggies. There are a lot of veggies in this recipe, and when you add them to the skillet, you might think, “What were they thinking? This will never fit!” Trust me! They’ll quickly cook down.

If it’s hard to toss everything at first, cover the skillet for a minute to help the vegetables wilt. Once they’ve softened a bit, you can easily toss them together.

Cooking the ground meat and veggies for an egg roll bowl

Tip 3: Add the sauce at the end. Our three-ingredient egg roll bowl sauce is incredibly simple and adds a lot of flavor to this dish. After adding it, you should notice that the salt in the oyster sauce and soy sauce begins to draw some moisture out of the cabbage, making the dish a little saucy.

You should have enough flavor in there, but if you taste and think it needs more, feel free to adjust with a bit more oyster sauce or salt.

Serving Suggestions

You can enjoy this egg roll-inspired bowl on its own for a low-carb, high-protein dinner, or serve it over rice, such as our flavorful cilantro lime rice or coconut rice.

For more veggies, try my favorite cauliflower rice or bump up the protein and fiber with quinoa (here’s how to cook quinoa). Finally, if you’re looking for a more traditional “bowl” experience, spoon it over noodles.

I’m obsessed with this egg roll in a bowl recipe, which is basically everything we love about egg rolls turned into a lighter, healthier, but still super flavorful bowl. For a lower-carb, high-protein option, serve it as is (thanks to the veggies, it’s hearty enough). Or you can serve it over cilantro lime rice, cauliflower rice, quinoa, or noodles!

If you are short on time, you can use a bag of coleslaw mix to make this, simply substitute it for the cabbage and carrots in the recipe below.

4 Servings

Watch Us Make the Recipe

You Will Need

1 ½ tablespoons toasted sesame oil

1 pound ground chicken or ground turkey (450g)

4 cups shredded cabbage (260g)

1 cup shredded carrots (100g)

1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

3 green onions, thinly sliced

2 to 3 tablespoons oyster sauce

1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce or tamari

1 teaspoon honey

3 tablespoons chopped cashews or peanuts

¼ cup chopped cilantro leaves

Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste

Sriracha or homemade spicy mayo, optional

Directions

1Cook the meat: Heat 1 ½ tablespoons of toasted sesame oil in a preheated large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken (or turkey) and cook until no longer pink, breaking it into crumbles, about 10 minutes.

2Add the veggies: When the ground meat is no longer pink and cooked through, toss in the cabbage, carrots, bell pepper, and green onion, and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. At first, it will seem like there are too many vegetables, but with a bit of time, they will wilt down considerably. If you are unable to stir them, cover the skillet with a lid for a minute to help them wilt down a little quicker.

3Make sauce: In a small bowl, stir 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and 1 teaspoon of honey.

4To finish: When the vegetables are tender and the chicken is cooked through, pour over the sauce and add about half of the cilantro. Toss well. Taste, then adjust with salt and pepper (I usually add a pinch of each). Finish with cashews, cilantro, and a drizzle of sriracha or spicy mayo on top.

Adam and Joanne's Tips

  • Storing: Keep this in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave.
  • Shortcut: To make this bowl with coleslaw mix, use a 14-ounce bag for the cabbage and carrots.
  • Oyster sauce substitute: Hoisin sauce is a great alternative.

Wow! I made this and it was delicious! Your recipe made me like this dish which has never been a hit for me. Your creation hit this humdrum meal out of the park. Can’t wait to share this with my son and daughter in law. The only difference I made because I didn’t have cashews, I sprinkled slivered almonds on top after fishing it in a bowl. Thank you!

Another beloved Inspired Taste recipe! Not one of the many recipes Ive made from this site have not been thoroughly enjoyed by my family! This came together easy & beautifully. Like another reviewer shared, I uses hoisin sauce in place of oyster sauce but added a couple extra tablespoons of it for added flavor. This was a hit! Served it over ramen style noodles. I did take the shortcut using the slaw but since the package didnt contain enough carrots, I also added a bunch of matchstick carrots (I was a bit concerned they were not fine cut enough to work, but they did, again, a timesaver for me.

So good! I didnt have oyster sauce on hand, but had everything else. Instead, I used some honey, garlic style sauce. It is not what the recipe intended, but it was still a delicious meal. Love these recipes, please keep them coming.

Your easy egg roll recipe looks delicious, but was wondering why is it called egg roll when there is no egg?

    • Adam Gallagher October 21, 2025

Hi Karen, we had the save question! While you sometimes see egg added to egg rolls, it’s usually not found in the filling (at least in most the egg rolls sold today). All that said, you can always scramble an egg or two and fold it into this bowl (it would work really well, sort of like when fried rice has egg added to it). Hope that clears it up for you!

I made this for the fist time a couple month ago and a least once every week since then. My family love loves it! Egg role in a bowl is healthy tasty and easy to make. We prefer using hoisen sauce but oyster sauce is good too. I really appreciate your website. I use many of your recipes on a regular basis. Easy turkey meatballs is another favorite because I find it easy to make and delicious. Thanks

Hi Carrie, The oyster sauce definitely makes this extra flavorful, that said, hoisin sauce would be a great alternative. You can also just stick with the soy sauce and honey, but might need to adjust how much you add to get the balance right.
